Most people set goals for the new year in January of each year. I like to be a little different. The last few years I have made September my personal and professional new year since my birthday is in September. Each year I look forward to it. So much so that this year, I started the process in mid-August and continued praying, planning, praying some more, throwing out those plans, planning some more, praying, organizing, researching, praying again, talking with Handsome about my thoughts, praying, and finally coming up with some things to set as short-term and long-term goals.
As a Christian artist, my “goals” are not defined the same way many people define theirs. Here is why. James reminds us in the Book of James 4:13 and 15, “you who say, ‘Today or tomorrow we will go into such and such a town and spend a year there and trade and make a profit’--yet you do not know what tomorrow will bring...Instead you ought to say, ‘If the Lord wills, we will live and do this or that.’” So when I say “goals”, it is shorthand for “If the Lord wills, I will live and do this or that.” It also means that I am not carving these goals in stone in order to dictate my life’s direction. Instead, I am committing to pray frequently over these goals and ask that the Lord guide my steps. I am even giving Him the authority to change my goals, speed up or slow down my milestones, or to revise them in any way that will glorify Him over me. If I stay true to following Jesus’ lead, I will call it a success.
Now that you know my definition of goals, here is the list I came up with and how you can join me, if you feel so inclined. The current year goals are more defined and are posted on the wall next to my computer monitor. The other goals are more general and are posted on the door leading into my studio.
