His Eye is On the Sparrow...

Savannah Sparrow, February 2018
Matthew 10:29-31 says, "What is the price of two sparrows—one copper coin? But not a single sparrow can fall to the ground without your Father knowing it. And the very hairs on your head are all numbered. So don’t be afraid; you are more valuable to God than a whole flock of sparrows."
This is a Savannah Sparrow. The way I know is by the strong streak lines on it's chest and white belly. It also has a touch of yellow up by its eye, a pinkish colored beak and legs, and the special markings on its head. There are lots of this specific type of bird. They are pretty common throughout the United States. And they are only one type of sparrow. There are several different kinds all around the world. They are so common, we often overlook them in favor of the more flashy cardinals and other brightly colored birds. Yet, God very carefully created so many different types of sparrows with their own unique markings so they could be told apart. And on top of that, He says that if even one of them dies, He knows. Wow! So what we see as common, God pays attention to as important and specially crafted.
Then God goes on to say that you and I are even more important than hundreds of these birds. So important that He knows exactly how many hairs are on each of our heads at any given moment.

When I see this sparrow, I cannot help but think of all the details that set it apart from the other sparrows and birds. Then I am reminded that God put even more detail in creating me and He knows each of those details intimately. So no matter what happens in life, God values and loves me.
God may not send a Hallmark card, but He does send us sparrows.
